After several years without professional football in the United States due to the bankruptcy of the NASL in 1985, the former professional league, Major League Soccer, also known by the acronym MLS, was created in 1993.
Following the success of soccer at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, the United States wanted to organize a World Cup. It was unimaginable for some to pretend to host a World Cup for a country without a top-level football championship.
Aware of these legitimate criticisms, the thought of Allan Rothenberg, one of the founders of the MLS, was to promote soccer to the Americans thanks to this World Cup in order to subsequently create a lucrative championship.
Despite the creation of MLS in 1993, it was in 1996 that the first season began with only 10 American franchises. The first MLS game was between DC United and the San Jose Clash on April 6, 1996.
Today, MLS has 28 franchises including 3 Canadian teams. The championship system is based on a regular season to qualify for the playoffs. The economic policy differs from that of the European leagues. The league imposes a payroll to be shared between the players of a club.
